I don’t often spend a lot of time shooting straight down the alley at a barrel race. The main reason is that this had the potential to be dangerous; horses are running up it at full speed and I lose all sense of depth perception when looking through my viewfinder. Today I was photographing a COBRA barrel race at an indoor arena about an hour from my home. At the very end of the show I got inspired to try to take a photo from the middle of the pen, looking down the alley. I asked one of the barrel racers to please just bring their horse to the alley. I’m so pleased with how this shot came out. The rider was apologetic that she couldn’t get her horse to stand still, however I love that you can see the motion of this animal. When a horse comes into a pen, they are full of energy and I think this showcases that well.
